"Speak to the children of Israel, and say to them: 'When you come into the land which I give to you, and reap its harvest, then you shall bring a sheaf of the firstfruits of your harvest to the priest. He shall wave the sheaf before the Lord, to be accepted on your behalf; on the day after the Sabbath the priest shall wave it. And you shall offer on that day, when you wave the sheaf, a male lamb of the first year, without blemish, as a burnt offering to the Lord."Leviticus 23:10-12 ; "But now Christ is risen from the dead, and has become the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. For since by man came death, by Man also came the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ all shall be made alive. But each one in his own order: Christ the firstfruits, afterward those who are Christ's at His coming."1 Corinthians 15:20-23

The Resurrection also occurs during a significant Old Testament feast day, the feast of “Firstfruits”. When Jesus rose from the dead he was the firstfruit of the resurrection. On that day the keys of Hell and Death were obtained by our Lord. The apostle Paul connected the resurrection with the feast of Firstfruits in his letter to the congregation at Corinith. "But now Christ is risen from the dead, and has become the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep." Remember in the Garden of Gethsemane that all the disciples had fled in terror because of their connection with Jesus. Yet not much later they experienced an astounding transformation which empowered them to preach the gospel fearlessly and face all kinds of suffering and martyrdom. What inspired this transformation? The resurrection... the living, breathing Lord who appeared to them in a glorious resurrected body. No longer were they concerned about this life, having experienced the reality that death's power had been absolutely overcome and there was nothing remaining in this world to threaten or shake their complete confidence in eternal life. The letter of James identifies believers in Jesus as "a kind of firstfruits of all He created"; [James 1:18]. Through our faith In the Lord's resurrection we have received His Holy Spirit and gained His resurrection life and power. It is a power over the fear of death, an overcoming power which enables us to endure and triumph over every kind of threat, problem, affliction, every trial or test involving suffering, pain, even the greatest anguish this life can bring. It's the same power that filled the Lord's disciples and transformed them from terrified men into fearless witnesses. We are no longer bound by the circumstances of our lives – but, as "firstfruits" who share in the resurrection life of our Lord, are empowered to endure, be transformed by, and ultimately overcome everything we face. Paul exults in this wondrous triumph, “But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ." And then he offers this exhortation, "Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your labor is not in vain in the Lord." [1 Corinthians 15:57-58] Brothers & Sisters, we are the "firstfruits" of the resurrection and we are no longer bound by the troubles and problems of this world. We can "count them all joy" as "steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord" we know that our labor is not in vain! WE ARE THE "FIRSTFRUITS" OF CREATION!

"And when he was come into Jerusalem, all the city was moved, saying, Who is this? And the multitude said, This is Jesus the prophet of Nazareth of Galilee. And Jesus went into the temple of God, and cast out all them that sold and bought in the temple, and overthrew the tables of the moneychangers, and the seats of them that sold doves, And said unto them, It is written, My house shall be called the house of prayer; but ye have made it a den of thieves. And the blind and the lame came to him in the temple; and he healed them."Matthew 21:10-14

There is a long standing tradition of cleaning one's house in the springtime – hence the term "spring cleaning". One source for this tradition is certainly the Jewish Passover (Pesach). Each spring as the holiday approaches observant householders in Israel and around the world perform a meticulous cleaning of their homes, especially to be sure there is no leaven in the house before Pesach begins. Leaven, in scripture, is often a metaphor for sin and impurity; and this season of the year is often a time for emphasizing "spiritual housecleaning". When Jesus entered Jerusalem for the last time in His earthly life, before the Passover, and just before He was sacrificed, He went to the Temple and "cleansed" it by driving out the money changers and religious merchandisers. Apparently, these were "religious" people with impure motives, and the Lord considered them to be "leaven" in his Father's house. Immediately after this, the Lord miraculously healed the blind and lame. Brothers & Sister, we can also be "religious" people with impure motives; seeking financial gain, or prestige, from "spiritual" activity, when the Lord desires a devoted heart of worship and prayer in His "house". Perhaps this is why we see so few miracles in our lives and "ministries". Let us also do a "housecleaning" for impure motivations. The Lord may then be freer to work His miracles through us. INSPECT YOUR TEMPLE!

“His voice was like the sound of many waters; and the earth shone with His glory. And it was like the appearance of the vision which I saw, like the vision which I saw when He came to destroy the city…and I fell on my face.”Ezekiel 43:2-3

In a vision, God led Ezekiel to the gate of Jerusalem that faced toward the east. As he looked, Ezekiel could see “the glory of the God of Israel was coming from the way of the east.” And he heard God’s voice, which “was like the sound of many waters.” The sight and sounds of the moment were overwhelming, as “the earth shone with His glory.” In response, Ezekiel fell on his face before God. In that moment, he received deeper insight about God’s nature and his own character. He realized that God was greater than anything He could imagine. Ezekiel acknowledged that he was nothing in His sight and that he owed everything to Him. This acknowledgment made it possible for Ezekiel to stop depending on himself and his own skills and abilities. He could recognize God’s greatness and experience His presence in a more powerful way. Many people, even many Believers, never really enter God’s presence or experience a truly intimate relationship with Him. It’s easy just to go through the motions and allow the ordinary things of this world to prevent us from experiencing the truly extraordinary. Such things can keep us from entering into the presence of God and flowing in the power of the Spirit. Brothers & Sister in your life, don’t allow the things of this world to keep you from experiencing God’s presence. Start by spending quality time with Him. Seek Him through times of intimacy. Talk with Him. Listen. Read and study His Word. Humble yourself before the Lord. Realize that you owe everything to Him and can accomplish nothing without Him. Sing spiritual songs. Worship Him and give Him thanks.

“Jehoshaphat had great riches and honor; and he allied himself by marriage with Ahab. Some years later he went down to visit Ahab at Samaria. And Ahab slaughtered many sheep and oxen for him and the people who were with him, and induced him to go up against Ramoth-gilead.”2 Chronicles 18:1-2

Jehoshaphat had been a good king. Because he sought God, the Lord was with him. Because of His blessings, Jehoshaphat “had great riches and honor,” and he “took great pride in the ways of the LORD.” As a result, “Jehoshaphat grew greater and greater” (2 Chronicles 17:2-12). During this time, the neighboring country of Israel was being ruled by Ahab, one of its most ungodly kings. Perhaps concerned about the security of his own people, Jehoshaphat foolishly “allied himself by marriage with Ahab.” After this, we see how Jehoshaphat allowed himself to be influenced by Ahab. In fact, Ahab “induced” and misled him. Not trusting in God, Jehoshaphat became vulnerable to clever words: Ahab convinced him to do what he wanted. The Bible warns us that this kind of deception is common in the world. In fact, there are many ways in which we can be deceived. We can be deceived by “smooth and flattering speech” (Romans 16:18) and by enticing promises and “empty words” (Ephesians 5:6). We can be deceived about God’s plans and the conditions of the world (1 Thessalonians 2:3). And we can deceive ourselves (1 Corinthians 3:18). We need to be on guard against all these forms of deception. We must beware against the pressure to conform to the ways of the world, and must refuse to allow others to shape our actions, attitudes, and beliefs to reflect their goals and objectives. Brothers & Sisters instead, we resolutely must stay true to God’s Word. We must remain in tune with His Spirit, sensitive to His leading. In everything, we must commit our ways to Him and let Him guide us. And when we have any questions or doubts, we need to seek Him and ask for His discernment.

Then the Lord said to Joshua, "This day I have rolled away the reproach of Egypt from you." Therefore the name of the place is called Gilgal to this day. Now the children of Israel camped in Gilgal, and kept the Passover on the fourteenth day of the month at twilight on the plains of Jericho."Joshua 5:2, 7-10; "but he is a Jew who is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the Spirit, not in the letter; whose praise is not from men but from God."Romans 2:29

Passover celebrates Israel's final departure from Egypt – that's why we read about it in "Exodus!" Leaving their former lives of slavery, the Jewish people now pressed forward looking toward the "Promised Land" and a new way of life. Their purpose was not only departure – it was also arrival to a new destination. Now there was a significant 40 year delay in the wilderness.... .....but Israel finally crossed over the Jordan river into the 'Promised land'. And as they entered the land, Joshua was commanded to circumcise Israel a “second time”. This circumcision of the flesh was required for their passage into the Promised Land, and I believe it is a picture for us. The flesh must be sacrificed for us to enter our inheritance. While the Passover event is a picture of our deliverance from sin and death through the sacrificed Lamb, this "circumcision" of the flesh is required for a fruitful life in the spirit which produces an inheritance. One might also see it as a circumcision of the heart, a removing of flesh which makes our heart alive and sensitive to the Lord and to others producing a life of love and good fruit. Brothers & Sisters, deliverance from sin and death is a free gift through the sacrifice of Messiah our perfect Lamb. Our response should be to offer our bodies, our flesh, as living sacrifices that we may enter the destiny of love and fruitfulness which is our own personal Promised Land. A life of holiness is the fruit of a circumcised heart which will yield a rich inheritance in the world to come.

“A wise man is strong, and a man of knowledge increases power.”Proverbs 24:5

How do we become strong? In physical terms, the body becomes stronger through exercise and the development of muscles. Nations gain strength by expanding their resources and developing their economic and military might. But there are other types of strength. The Bible tells us that “a wise man is strong.” The principle here is that real strength is a by-product of God’s wisdom. Why? Because those who have Godly wisdom are given a power beyond their natural abilities. They have strength of character, which comes from resolve, determination, faith, and convictions. The Hebrew words used in this passage suggest that strength comes from having skills and then developing these skills; from being experienced and intelligent; to be so equipped that we can face challenges and persevere in the face of obstacles; and seeking God’s discernment so we are able to make wise decisions. In a similar way, if we want to increase in “power,” the Bible tells us we should be a person “of knowledge.” Physical strength and prowess have certain advantages, but the Bible continually reminds of the importance of spiritual strength. This means being filled with the Spirit, surrendering to the lordship of Jesus, and basing our lives on God’s Word. But we also are warned, “If you fall under pressure, your strength is too small” (v. 10). This implies being ready for the pressure situations we all face from time to time. We must be armed, prepared, and equipped—ready for spiritual attacks and knowing how to respond. The Bible also reminds us that, in ourselves, we are weak. As Paul taught, we should realize that “when I am weak, then I am strong” (2 Corinthians 12:10). Real strength comes from reliance on God. Brothers & Sisters, do you face challenges in your life? Remember to seek God’s wisdom. Ask Him for His perspective on the issues you face. And remember to depend on Him, knowing that He is with you. Regardless of the problems you face, you can trust Him.

"Behold, the days are coming, says the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah -- not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt, My covenant which they broke, though I was a husband to them, says the Lord. But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord: I will put My law in their minds, and write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people."Jeremiah 31:31-33

As I traveled across my country, I occasionally came across individuals who didn't believe that Israel and the Jewish people were relevant to God's redemptive plan. Amazed, I would show them this passage in Jeremiah foretelling how God would make a 'New Covenant' with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah! This scripture, an Old Testament foundation for our entire New Testament, was addressed to the two houses of Israel, yet its fulfillment in the Messiah (Jesus) was received by only a (significant) remnant of them, at His first coming. The apostle Paul, however, unequivocally affirms that this initial remnant of saved Israel carried the Messianic revelation to the entire world and that revelation would eventually be returned to the Jewish people in full measure; For I do not desire, brethren, that you should be ignorant of this mystery, lest you should be wise in your own opinion, that blindness in part has happened to Israel until the fullness of the Gentiles has come in. And so all Israel will be saved, as it is written: "The Deliverer will come out of Zion, And He will turn away ungodliness from Jacob; For this is My covenant with them, When I take away their sins." [Romans 11:25-27] And interestingly, Israel's future inheritance in the New Covenant is highlighted as well by ancient rabbinical commentary on Jeremiah 31:31-32; "When the time of the advent of the Messiah will be near, then the blessed God will say to him: 'With him I will make a new covenant. And this is the time I will acknowledge Him as my son, saying 'This day have I begotten thee.' [Midrash Tehelim, 3:4] Indeed ancient rabbis saw in this scripture that the new covenant was connected to Psalm 2 and would be ushered in by the Messiah, who would be God's own son.....hmmm. Another ancient rabbinical commentary on Jeremiah 31:31,32 says, "He will sit and expound the new Torah (teaching or instruction) which He will give through the Messiah."[MidrashTalpiyot, 58a] So the testimony of Jesus, the Son of God, came through the Tenach (Old Testament), Moses, the Prophets and Psalms, which are the scriptures of the Jewish people, and is even supported by rabbinical commentaries. In addition, the entire New Testament (with the possible exception of Luke) was written by Jews. This people, blessed of God in so many ways, and chastened accordingly for their disobedience, is still quite relevant to God's plans. His "gifts and callings are irrevocable" [Romans 11:29]. Brothers & Sisters, God is not finished with Israel or the Jewish people. And thank and praise Him for the faithfulness of that promise, because if He remains faithful to such a disobedient nation, He will also remain faithful to all those called and chosen through the revelation of Israel's Messiah...you and me. GOD IS NOT FINISHED WITH THE JEWISH PEOPLE, OR WITH YOU!

"And a woman having a flow of blood twelve years, who had spent all her livelihood on physicians, and could not be healed by anyone, Came up behind Him, and touched the border of His garment: and immediately her flow of blood stopped. And Jesus said, "Who touched Me? When all denied it, Peter and those that were with Him said, "Master, the multitude are crowding and pressing on You, and You say, 'Who touched Me?'" And Jesus said, "Somebody touched Me: for I perceive that power had gone out of Me." And when the woman saw that she was not hidden, she came trembling, and fell down before Him, she declared unto Him before all the people the reason she had touched Him, and how she had been immediately healed."Luke 8:43-47

Isn't it interesting that of the multitudes thronging and pressing toward Jesus, only one really touched Him? What made Jesus notice her among all the rest? This woman was desperate. She had reached the end of her rope. She had probably spent all her money visiting every doctor she could find and done all she could do to help herself in the natural realm. I think she finally realized that what she truly needed was a touch from the Lord. As she reached for Him, dynamite power flowed out of the Lord and radically healed and changed her! Somehow, the world has us convinced that the solution to all our problems come from it! We tend to look to people and material things to satisfy our earthly desires instead of looking to the Lord! Brothers & Sisters, do you need a touch from the Lord today? How much are you longing for Him? Let's abandon the ways we've been reaching out to the world for strength -- and determine to reach out to the Lord in faith and believe! REACH OUT AND TOUCH SOMEONE!

“You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.”Matthew 5:43-44

The Romans had fostered an environment of hate. Within Rome itself, there were intense personal rivalries, often fueled by selfish ambition. In a letter written in 59 BC, Cicero, the famed Roman orator, declared that “the present regime is the most scandalous in history, the most disgraceful and universally hated by all sorts, classes, and ages of man.” As Rome’s empire spread, its leaders fostered more hatred and many rebellions. Among the most successful revolts was conducted by Mithridates. This man, who ruled Pontus (in the north of modern Turkey) in the early first century BC, called Rome the “common enemy of mankind.” People throughout the region cheered his victories. In a famous speech, Mithridates declared that “the Romans have enemies everywhere,” the result of “their corrupt government, rapacious tax-collecting, and public auction of our property.” The Jews had many reasons to hate the Romans, who had conquered their nation and suppressed their independence. Many hoped for a revolution…a miracle. Amid this environment, Jesus proclaimed an extraordinary new standard. His followers were not to hate Rome or anyone else. In fact, they were told to love their enemies and “pray for those who persecute you.” This was a revolutionary teaching. The key to true strength and victory was in having a different attitude: being poor in spirit and gentle…hungering and thirsting for righteousness…being merciful and pure in heart. Instead of championing war, Jesus’ followers were to be “peacemakers” and “the light of the world.” They were to live in such a way that others would “see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven” (vs. 3-16). Brothers & Sisters, these principles demonstrate why the Gospel is so different and so powerful. If you want to please God and experience His richest blessings, make these traits the cornerstones of your life.

The people of Israel had sinned, and they deserved judgment. God desired to forgive them, yet judgment still came. Why? First, the Lord could find no one who would “build up the wall.” Facing a massive threat from Babylon, they all understood the need for a wall. But this meant that someone needed to take action. And they needed a plan and resources. However, no one stepped forward or accepted the responsibility. Perhaps no one felt qualified or worried about not having adequate resources. Or they may have felt that the task was too great. It seemed that no one had faith that God would bless them. No one was confident He would reward those who had willing hearts, ready to obey Him and trust Him for the outcome. Second, no one would “stand in the gap.” In military terms, a gap represents a space where there is a weakness. It is an opening for the enemy. So what does it mean for you to “stand in the gap”? Spiritually, this could mean being a prayer warrior, interceding for your family, for people in need, or for your country. It could mean battling with the devil and his demons. It could mean tackling a challenging assignment or sacrificially Sowing financial Seeds into God’s Kingdom. It could mean taking a bold stand for the Gospel.
